Continuing our recognition of Women In Construction Week (WIC), today we shine a spotlight on our Customer Care Co-ordinator, Yvonne Dickman.
Women currently make up approximately 15% of the UK construction workforce. At Amethyst Homes, we are committed to increasing this visibility by fostering an environment where talent thrives regardless of gender.
By celebrating our employees, like Yvonne, we hope to inspire the next generation of women- whether they are interested in Quantity Surveying, Sales, Site Management, or Customer Care-to see construction as a field where they can truly “Level Up”.
Key Responsibilities:
Yvonne has been part of the company for over four and a half years and is a central link to our customers. She ensures that the transition into a new Amethyst home is as seamless and supportive as possible.
• Daily co-ordination: Managing the customer care inbox and coordinating essential site works.
• Problem solving: Acting as a bridge between homeowners and site teams to resolve queries swiftly.
• Relationship building: Ensuring every customer feels valued long after they receive their keys.
Yvonne’s role is a perfect example of the diverse professional paths available within construction. While many think of the industry only in terms of boots on the ground, experts like Yvonne demonstrate that project management, communication, and office-based leadership are equally essential to building successful communities.
Could you share a particularly memorable project or a challenge you’ve overcome?
I recently supported a homeowner who had flooring issues but faced significant mobility challenges. To make things easier, I visited him personally with sample books so he could choose his new flooring from the comfort of his home. I then coordinated the entire installation with our sub-contractors. Following up afterward to see his gratitude and satisfaction was a real highlight for me.
What are some of the specific hurdles you’ve faced as a woman in the industry, and how do you navigate them?
The biggest challenge is often ensuring your voice is heard and that standards are met. I overcome this by staying firm on quality – making sure people listen and that the job is done properly the first time.
Do you feel unconscious bias is still a hurdle in the industry today?
While it may exist elsewhere, I don’t feel it’s an issue within Amethyst. We have a culture of mutual respect here that makes a huge difference.
In your opinion, what unique perspectives do women bring to construction?
Women often bring a high level of empathy and understanding to the table. We recognise that what is important to one homeowner might be completely different to another, and that “caring” side helps us manage those relationships effectively.
How have you seen the industry evolve for women since you first started?
It has improved significantly. It’s been really positive to see so many more women entering roles like Quantity Surveying. The landscape is definitely changing for the better.
How can we better encourage women to join (and stay) in the industry?
Ensuring equal pay is vital, and fortunately, most modern construction firms are now achieving this. Beyond that, it’s about inclusion-involving women in major projects and new initiatives from the ground up.
Finally, what advice would you give to a woman or school leaver just starting out?
Don’t give up! If you are passionate about construction, you can absolutely do it. My biggest piece of advice is to be bold: ask lots of questions and never be shy.
