As the industry celebrates Women in Construction Week (WIC) 3rd to 8th March, we want to recognise the valued contribution of members of our team.
Today, we share Sophie Charlton, our Assistant Quantity Surveyor’s thoughts on the industry.
She said: “My responsibilities include assisting in measuring the value of construction projects, from the initial startup to the completion stage, including the management of all financial and contractual aspects.
“I have been working in the industry for almost six years, beginning my career as part of my Quantity Surveying degree in 2018 and continued throughout my final year of university. I have had experiences in the roles of a Professional Quantity Surveyor and a Main Contractors Quantity Surveyor.
“Using these experiences, I have found that a combination of both roles is where I am best suited, so my position as Assistant Quantity Surveyor at Amethyst Homes is great for my professional development.
“I had not really thought about a career in construction, when I was in secondary school, I had no idea what I wanted to do. Eventually, when I was due to go to college, open days, and family influences pushed me towards the industry. After a year of studying, I decided becoming a Quantity Surveyor was the career path best suited to me.
“To women looking to work in the industry, I would say do not be discouraged by the old stereotype of this being a ‘man’s industry.’ Construction is diversifying every day with more women being hired in a wide range of roles. No matter your background or qualifications, there are so many options available for you to pursue the successful career you want.”
